In the opening moments of Bert Marcus and Cyrus Saidi’s What We Started, an attempted chronicle of the genre’s beginnings and never-endings that drops later this week, journalist Kerri Mason unknowingly offers an explanation: “The biggest misconception is that dance music is a new thing.” Even if the statement isn’t strictly true, it speaks to the general perception of EDM’s rise (and eventual sorta-fall) as the rare economic juggernaut in a perpetually skint music industry.
